Trends Shaping Yacht Travel in Indonesia by 2025

Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, has addressed the increasing issue of illegal tourism villas in Bali.
Speaking at the World Water Conference in Bali, Minister Uno pointed out that numerous villas are bypassing essential construction and business permits.
He cited several illegal villas being misused, including a private tourism villa in Canggu that was recently found to be a drug production site. This discovery led to the arrest of four individuals who were using Sunny Villa for methadone production and marijuana cultivation.
Minister Uno also noted that many private villas lack proper construction permits or violate their initial permits. He stressed that many villas operate without the required business and tourism licenses.
At the Standardisation and Certification of the Tourism Sector meeting in Kuta, Bali, Minister Uno explained that the lack of proper permits for tourism businesses in many villas leads to illegal activities like drug use.
He expressed disappointment over the low awareness of standardization and certification among tourism business operators, from accommodations to various attractions.
Minister Uno urged local governments and stakeholders to educate the public on the importance of Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and a Sustainable Environment (SNI CHSE). He emphasized the need to scale up efforts to prevent accidents and improper tourism practices, particularly as Bali is a major tourism hub with few certified companies.
Minister Uno confirmed that construction has been halted, and an investigation is underway regarding the Pemutih Pecatu Beach project by Mirah Development Group. Authorities are reviewing all permits following a construction landslide that damaged the limestone cliff between Impossibles Beach and Bingin Beach in Uluwatu.
Addressing another incident where an ancient tree was cut down for a hotel project on the island, Minister Uno expressed regret. He also commented on concerns about mining in Banyuwangi, East Java, where noise pollution from explosives disturbed residents and tourists near Pulau Merah Beach.
Minister Uno reiterated the need for all tourism development to align with CHSE guidelines, emphasizing that sustainable tourism is crucial for achieving the vision of Wonderful Indonesia 2030: green tourism.
The Head of Badung Satpol PP, I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, reported that a site visit had been conducted, and they are investigating the Pemutih Pecatu Beach project. He stated that the project is temporarily halted, pending clarification of the permits.
The Mirah Development Group has promised to restore the beach within 28 days, but the consequences for any permit violations or negligence leading to the landslide remain unclear.
